Pied Butcher Bird

These birds have the most beautiful song in the world. They're called butcher birds because if you have a look at their talon's you'll notice they are quite short. Being predators, this means that they can't eat and fly at the same time like most other predatory birds. They'll swoop down and grab mice from the ground, dropping them from a great height to kill them, they will grab the dead prey and take them to a tree. The butcher bird will then hang their food upside down in a fork in a branch, just like meat on a hook, then tear off the meat that way. Generally they eat small rodents, mice etc. This one is only young, fully grown birds are fully black and white, this one was mostly gray. Don't forget to view the link so you can hear it's song.

  1. Have heard of these but never seen one before, great song like you say. Adult looks a bit like the magpies we get here in Yorkshire.
