The Abandoned Theatre

This is the drive-in just outside of Alice Springs. It was built in the 50's or 60's, I can't seem to find too much information on it, and now it is heritage listed. Obviously that memo didn't make it to those peoples that destroyed most of it.

As a result of being heritage listed, no one has bought it until recently and it hasn't been operational for over ten years. I loved driving up and I was shaking with excitement when I found the old projectors mostly in tact.

The Coles Mural

I think that this is lovely ideal with the aboriginal and white people mingling and picnicking. Let's hope that those days are getting closer. It's kind of cool with the 70's/80's style cartoon figures. It's one of those rare pieces that manage to survive without having graffiti drawn all over it.

Playing with Camera

So the other day I got my new 60D and I have to say it's amazing. I also got an awesome Tamron 18-270mm f/3.6 lens. That night it was a full moon so I decided to take it through it's paces.

Pubs and About.

This is one of the many pubs of Alice Springs. A quieter one but none-the-less full of character. Over the next couple of days, especially when I finally get some time off, I'm gonna go around to some of the more character-rich places and get some shots.

Butterfly

While wild-life isn't that uncommon, like seeing a frilled-neck lizard on the way to work this morning (unfortunately no camera) seeing butterfly's out here on the edge of the desert is. So I jumped at the opportunity to take this before my puppy ate it!

Food Leftovers

Boxing day lunch is almost as big as the actual day itself. These are some of the leftover Kipfler potato's and garlic getting cooked up in the BBQ again. I just loved the colours in this one because of all the yellow and orange and the bokeh works really well. Plus they were yummy.

Christmas in the Center

Christmas in the red center isn't so red at the moment. Mostly out here it's too hot to really get in to the swing of things and christmas is more about the getting pissed than the getting in the spirit. But it can be kind of fun too.

Today is going to be a nice quiet day but lots of food and laughter. I took this photo the other night of our christmas tree so I hope you all like.

NO GROG!!!

So in Alice there are certain areas that alcohol is not allowed. I know how contentious a subject that this is but the truth of the matter is, it's needed. There's still a lot of alcohol abuse over here and generally speaking the only thing that is thrown around to deal with the problem is money. Really maybe social services should be enforced.

Even when you buy alcohol you need to show your license so that it can be scanned in to a computer system and away it goes. If you buy too much grog, then that's it, you're cut off. While it's an odd thing for most people to see, it's pretty common for those of us in Alice to see signs like this everywhere especially on aboriginal communities.

Arunga Park Speedway

In Alice there isn't a lot to do once you've gone from short term/tourist to long term resident. There are a few occasions that bring together the "regular" people (there are some occasions that bring the "not-so-regular" people together also). One of these is when the speedway season starts. It isn't really a regular thing but it's a bit of fun for the rev-heads and the non-rev-heads alike.

One time I went with a bunch of friends and had to stop and get this sign. It's a lasting reminder that Alice Springs has always had this entertainment and I believe that the sign is the original dating back to the mid-sixties and it was sort of revamped in the eighties.

Anyway I loved using the polarising filter on this, it makes the background just pop that sign right out. And the black and white is also a nice retro touch, a kind of dark reminder that time just keeps passing Alice by.

Alice Springs Today

Ok so I thought that I'd start off with a cool little image depicting the northern entrance sign. There's not much artistic about it. Bad angle, bad colour. The only thing that I do like is that it shows the spirit of Alice Springs at christmas...

None.

It's just too damned hot for it. Anyway Thanks for viewing this page check back tomorrow for more.
